In the newborn |skull|, the bones are not yet solidly sutured. Between these bones is located a cartilaginous membrane, called the ~fontanelle~, which connects the bones of the nerwborn's |skull|. In the newborn, this ~cartilage~ is still quite flexible, allowing the |skull| to deform slightly as it passes through the birth canal. The mastoid fontanelle is one of these, located at the lower, ~posterior~ of the temporal area, where the |mastoid process| will develop. It does not suture rigidly until about the end of the first year after birth.
